"Kandahar" is a 2001 Iranian drama, war, and biographical film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf and set in Afghanistan. The film follows Nafas (played by Niloufar Pazira), a journalist who fled Afghanistan as a child and now lives in Canada. She receives a letter from her sister, who still lives in Afghanistan, informing her that she plans to commit suicide on the last solar eclipse of the 20th century. Determined to save her sister's life, Nafas embarks on a dangerous journey through the Taliban-infested countryside of Afghanistan to reach Kandahar. Throughout her journey, Nafas encounters various individuals who have been affected by the war in Afghanistan, including children who have lost limbs due to landmines, a boy who dreams of becoming a doctor, and a woman who disguises herself as a man to work and support her family. Kandahar provides a glimpse into the bleak reality of life under the Taliban regime and the struggles faced by Afghan civilians. The film features a cast of Iranian and Afghan actors, including Ikek Ogu, Hassan Tantai, Sadou Teymouri, Hossain Emadeddin, and Molla Zahir Teymouri. "Kandahar" received critical acclaim and was selected as the Iranian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.
